My Grandparents Need a Pet

Because of quarantine, I basically don't see my grandparents. They are pretty sad about it, and I think they need a pet. But what would be a good option? A dog costs a lot to keep and needs at least three walks a day, and most birds need way more space than their apartment has to offer. They wouldn't want a pet that makes a huge mess, and an intelligent pet would definitely be preferable. I saw an article praising ferrets, but the author looked like he would turn into one at a full moon or something. What animal would be perfect for them? Is a cat a good suggestion, or would it need many walks or is there some other difficulty? How friendly are cats?
