New cat owner. Considering pet insurance but doesn't seem worth it.

I adopted an 8y/o male cat. The shelter said he has a low grade heart murmur (1-2 on a scale of 6). I've read that this isn't exactly abnormal for an older cat but it could be definitely be an issue. I am considering pet insurance however:

  • If the vet (I have an appointment next week) says it is not an issue currently, would it getting worse down the road be covered? In other words while the current heart murmur is preexisting, if it is ruled benign but develops worse in a year or 2, is it still "preexisting"?

  • My quote was $19/month $750 deductible w/70% reimbursement... This seems not as good as I was expecting. There wasn't any coverage options either A $3k bill would cost me ~$1500 and a $10k bill would cost me $3.5k. I was hoping for closer to 90% reimbursement...

I am leaning towards simply opening a savings account and putting $50/month in it as an emergency fund. This is assuming the vet says the murmur is not a big deal currently. After a few years it would cover all but the craziest worst case vet bills. I have my own emergency savings as well so it is not like I'll be screwed if the cat needs something sooner than ~1-2years.

I'll see what the vet says but doesn't hurt to get reddit's opinion.
