Hi guys, strange situation here. I apologize for formatting as I’m on mobile.
I adopted a shy, sweet one year old long haired kitty 3.5 weeks ago from a save-a-stray type shelter. Her mother was a stray, had kittens and raised them behind a Honda dealership for a handful of weeks before being picked up by the shelter. They were all fostered to good health and eventually adopted out, my little Greta being the last to go.
I suppose it worth mentioning that we also have two children, 4 and 11. Greta was fostered with a family of 5 before I adopted her, so there was little concern with bringing her into a home with two kids. It became pretty clear after 3 weeks of her hiding from dawn until my human rascals went to bed each night that she really wasn’t getting comfortable being out during the day or with the family. She would eventually peep out from under the couch when my husband and I went to bed, and make her way into our bedroom.. the actual bed, to be specific... and crawl under the blankets and spend the night there. Each morning she would be gone before we got up, and we always found her back under the couch.
Friday night came, marking 3 weeks since her adoption. She did her normal thang, following us to bed and snuggling in for the night between us. Saturday morning I get up and check under the couch to greet her, and there’s no sign of her. I start checking other easily accessible hiding spots, nothing. I was a little panicked at this point but not entirely worried.
By Saturday night, I began to really panic, perhaps irrationally. We tore the house apart. Pulled appliances out, ripped closets to shreds, flipped mattresses, pulled out drawers, you name it. No sign of her. By the next morning when she hadn’t touched her food/water or used the cat box, I was full blown panicking. We checked again, and again, and again. There’s no possible way she could’ve escaped (that I know of) because we haven’t left the house at all.
Where the hell could this cat be?? I’m terrified she may be stuck somewhere. The only way she could’ve gotten outside is through a closed, locked crawl space that has 1.75inch (yes, I measured) gap at the bottom of the door where it meets the frame. It’s been almost 5 days since we’ve seen any sign of her and I really don’t know what to do at this point. She was due to be chipped yesterday and I had to cancel that appointment, obviously. Our house is an old barn, and there are a few nooks and crannys although they’re pretty inaccessible/sealed up for the most part. I’m really worried. Anyone have experience with this sort of thing??
