Why did my new cat become less affectionate a few days after coming home?

I just want to make sure I'm not doing something wrong! A couple weeks ago, my fiance and I adopted a young male cat. He's around 1-2 years old, neutered, and formerly a stray. When we met him at the shelter, and for a few days after we took him home, he was VERY clingy and would cry and pat at doors if we left his sight for even a moment. He would sit on my lap, nuzzle his head against us wherever he could, beg for pets, rub against us, cuddle, etc. etc.

After a few days, he became more distant toward us. He still likes to be close by us most of the time--he will go do his own thing in different rooms of the house, but he comes to us when he wants to play, and about half the time he wants to at least be in the same room as us. He will still follow me from room to room pretty frequently, even though he doesn't really want to be petted. He no longer sits in my lap or rubs against us; he does knead us in bed from time to time and will sleep either at the foot of the bed or next to our legs most of the time. However, no nuzzling, no rubbing, and he doesn't seem to like to be petted much at all. If anything he just tolerates it.

Are we doing something wrong? Or is it just that he was trying to win our affection at first and now feels secure? I just want to make sure! Thanks guys!
