Adopted high energy cat - 4 years old

Hi,

I want to preface this by saying I’ve had cats my entire life but this one stumps me. Last month, I adopted a cat from a sort of informal sanctuary/farm. He’s been a pretty good cat so far but he is so high energy and I’m a bit at a loss. I am at my wits end, I don’t know what to do, he’s keeping us up all night and possibly terrorizing our other cat.

I have a variety of toys that I use to play with him, almost constantly on and off throughout the day. When I’m not playing with him he is either napping or chasing after our other cat. When I catch him napping during the day, I will force him awake (if he can’t sleep during the day, you’d think he’d sleep during the night). I also play with him HARD, using a wand toy to work him up to a pant. He also plays fetch with me and I will do that to try and tire him out.

I mentioned that he’s been chasing our older cat. I honestly can’t tell if they’re actually fighting or just play fighting. They don’t hiss or growl, they’re always silent during the fights. My older (8 years) cat is usually on his back, the cat this post is about is usually standing over him. Both cats have their ears back, and tails wagging. I think what’s happening is that the high energy cat is engaging the other cat in play but taking it too far. I separated them last night and put the high energy cat in a spare bedroom. The older cat waited by the door and when I let the high energy cat out there wasn’t any conflict.

I am really at a loss of what else to do. I need to be able to sleep and I’m worried about my older cat being terrorized. Any suggestions to help have him leave us alone or any insight into the cats relationship would be great.
