We recently saved a stray kitty that's been hanging out around our apartment complex. We took him to the vet and he ended up testing positive for FeLV. He is a real sweety and honestly really attached to us and coming out of his shell. He is also 2-3 years old and we really think he got it recently. We're having him do the more advanced tests to see if he gets over it but we aren't sure what to do if he is a chronic.
Our other cat is over a year old and has been vaccinated for FeLV and tested negative before her vaccination. She was also a stray, who was abandoned at 5 months pregnant with a full litter of kittens. All her kittens ended up healthy. We fully intend to keep her up to date on her FeLV vaccine and all other vaccines even though both cats are 100% indoor cats.
With the current situation how it is we feel it will be hard to rehome the stray who is positive. We're hoping he just clears it and we are fine. However, we are heavily considering keeping him regardless because we spent so much time getting him in to safety and the fact that finding him a home may be super difficult. Our other cat is very healthy and an adult. Since she is an adult we realize she is also at a lesser risk for contracting it or even having it as bad as a kitten. Especially since she is vaccinated. They also don't interact much at the moment or share food/water/litter boxes. They kinda just exist in the same room.
Would it be wrong to keep an FeLV positive cat around with our other cat?
