Dog suddenly cowers a bit when approaching the car door when we come home

He's about 3 years old and absolutely beaming with life. It takes a lot to make him afraid, nothing really phases him, not even scolding or lightning.

It used to be that, when we came home, he'd run out of his dog door to the car, we'd open it enough for him to see us, and he'd get all excited and even jump in with us if we told him it was okay. Always loves seeing us and has always been very well behaved.

But a few weeks back, he suddenly started approaching the door very slowly, head down, ears deflated. Doesn't get excited (though he will if we walk in before he notices the car coming back, or if we get inside before he comes out) and won't even come in the car if we tell him it's okay.

At first we thought maybe he had been getting into trash or something and felt like he was in trouble, but no, we broke that habit ages ago. We thought maybe he might just be groggy from waking up from a nap or something while we were gone, but even if someone else is home when a car pulls in, he still approaches very hesitantly.

This obviously isn't a HUGE deal, he's 100% normal in every other circumstance, but are there any ideas onto what might have caused this behavior? I just don't like thinking we're scaring him when he's done nothing wrong.
