Hazy/white area on cat's eyes

We just adopted a 15-year-old cat. She has a hazy/white/silverish spot on both eyes, it almost covers her full right eye, on the left eye is only on the very top and most of the time it doesn't seem to block her vision on that eue. It's a long story, but I was told it was some kind of "protein build-up”. She was referred to an eye doctor in 2007 but probably never taken, until a few years ago she was an indoor/outdoor cat and since she is only indoor. She had annual exams and updated shots since she was first adopted at 3-4 months old. She doesn't see to be bothered by it, but obviously is making at least one of her eyes hazy. As far I can tell (by looking through the clear parts), the hazy is on the top/outer layer of the eye.

I am trying to arrange an appointment with the eye doctor, but they are booked for weeks, and I am looking for ideas/comments/opinions, so I can be prepared and check if there is something I can do in the interim.

I just started her on MicrocynAH Ophthalmic Gel (she is very cooperative and doesn't seem to be bothered by it other than a couple of reflexive blinks), and I am waiting for cat lysine to arrive in a day or two (in case of a viral infection/herpes). I really hope there is something it can be done for her at this point.

Please help me to help a sweet senior kitty!
