Hi!
My family is moving to London from India end of August and we are taking the light of our lives, Coco, with us. The problem is that I've tried everything to avoid cargo - I've spoken to cruise ships, looked in to road trips and private charters but the only way to bring a dog in to the UK from India is through flights with dogs travelling in Cargo. This has been giving me a lot of anxiety because I've read some horror stories and I don't know what to do - we have to move and I don't want to leave her behind. I just can't.
So I looked into direct flights and we settled on British Airways. I hired a pet relocation company to make all her export and import paperwork to go by quicker so that we don't have to be apart needlessly. TO prepare her, I've started crate training with her but she doesn't like to spend more than 20 min locked in and its always with a treat to keep her busy. She'll stay in as long as the treat lasts. How can I work up to her sleeping through the night in a locked crate so that she can easily do 10 hours of fly time? We'll probably be apart for another 6-7 hours in total, before and after the flight. How can I teach her to self soothe in times of turbulence or when she's feeling anxious?
I've hired a canine nutritionist to help her lose weight - she weighs 12 kgs currently and I'm hoping that we can her her to 9kgs by the time we have to fly - obese dogs with short snouts don't do too well in flights.
She's a brave little girl, unafraid of thunder or fireworks, but she doesn't do too well when we're apart. Please help me if you have ever flown your dog esp if they have small snouts? How was your experience? What did you do to recreate conditions of being on flight in cargo to prepare your pup? What can I do to prepare Coco for the flight? What are some crate training tricks? Really anything - even little tips will help!
55 days to train and try everything possible.
This is my first Reddit post and I'm sorry if I'm rambling. I'm just an anxious dog mom wanting the best for her little one. 💓 Thank you for reading and giving us your time.
