We raised our cat, who is now 4 years old, from the time she was a kitten. She's used to being the only cat in the house and has never been socialized with other animals (except for brief encounters at the vet clinic). She did have a sister with her at the shelter, but we couldn't adopt both of them so we just got her. As a result, she's used to being the only one. She doesn't like having strangers (people other than my husband and I) come into the house, but if they ignore her for a few hours, she will get curious and cautiously come say hi. She's sweet when she wants to be, and SUPER playful, but she can be quite a Jekyll and Hyde. One minute she's curling up on my lap purring, and the next minute she's randomly biting me for no reason other than I decided to walk by her or sit next to her on the couch.
With how energetic she is, and that fact that she ALWAYS wants to play, we have been considering getting another cat for a number of years, but are just now able to do it because we finally have a house with plenty of room for her, plus another cat. In August, we are going to a cat cafe that adopts out cats and kittens, and if we fall in love with a kitten there, we might bring it home. On the one hand, I think it would be good for her, as she would finally have someone to play with. But on the other hand, with her personality, I worry that it might not go well at all....I worry that she might attack the kitten or start peeing/pooping in the house instead of the litter box, or that she would just get jealous and become mean or destructive.
I just want to do what's best for her...but I don't know if that means getting her a little brother or sister to play with, or if it would be better just letting her remain the only cat in the house, as she is already used to that. I love her so much and don't want to stress her out or cause her to change in a negative way.
