I've never had a per, so I dont know what it's like. But is having to put down a close pet really painful?

My Ex-Bf and I were together for 5 years, we separated because of many reason, but one was his sick dog. I fully admit it was me being selfish and stupid.

I messaged him a few weeks ago claiming I was sorry, and that I never meant to hurt him. He said sorry for his share of the bad aspects in our relationship.

Last night he messaged me asking me if I could go with him sometime in the next week to put his dog of 14 years down. He said no one else will go with him, or all have given him some dumb excuse. He said I'm the only person to ever see him cry and hes scared to be alone.

Is putting an animal down really hard and painful as hes making it sound to be? I know he loves this dog like a son, but i dont know if I'm ready to see him again. I just need to know what it's like to kinda help me make my decision
