One of my dogs scratched his paw pretty badly when he was outside over a YEAR AGO. Literally May 2019. I cleaned it up and wrapped it when it happened but he kept tearing off the bandage to lick it. Like non stop licking. Anytime he wasn’t occupied with eating or playing with my other dog, he was licking the wound. My bf and I cleaned it regularly and wrapped it so many different ways, we watched YouTube tutorials on how to wrap it, we bought several different kinds of bitter spray to put on the bandage but he continued to take it off. We bought toys and peanut butter filled bones to keep him occupied, which he liked but didn’t keep him from licking his paw when we weren’t there. We even put a cone on him but he STILL figured out how to lick his paw with it on. It never got infected or anything but it just didn’t heal and bleeds sometimes because he never gave it the chance to scab over. When he had his annual checkup at the vet about 8 months ago now, the vet looked at the wound and said it was fine and didn’t have any advice to give us because we had basically tried it all. She said as long as it wasn’t getting infected we didn’t have to worry about it. I’m not buying it, I don’t want my dog to have this obsession with licking his paw raw for the rest of his life. It seems to bother him. He did stop licking it for a little while a couple months ago and it healed and the fur had started to grow back, but then he randomly started licking it again this week!! There was nothing there but a scar under the fur like I do not understand why he’s licking it again. He turned it into an open wound all over again! Whyyyy?? If anyone has any advice other than what we’ve already tried, please let me know because I don’t know what to do to help him anymore.
