neighbours cat won’t leave!! accidentally “stole” a cat.

i’ve lived with cats all my life but when i moved house to a house with barely any garden space, we gave the cat to my grandparents with a lovely garden as he loves to explore. he’s happy there but ever since then we’ve missed having a cat. there are a few cats that live on my lane and a few of them have come over to our garden to meet us and we had given them treats but one of them has really taken a liking to us. at first we thought it was fine he (or she ?) would come for strokes then leave, we gave him some dreamies that we had lying around and he would go home. as he’s become more fond of us he started meowing at our back door in the morning and going into our house and the only way we could get him to leave was by tricking him with food or quickly locking him out :((( and even then he’d stare at you through the window. whenever he came over he seemed ravenous so we would feed him which i think after doing some research was a mistake!!! he now loves coming in for food and strokes and last night he wouldn’t leave and ended up sleeping in my bed. we made him go out in the morning and didn’t feed him because we felt so guilty and we didn’t want him to think this was his home, then he was meowing at the back door a few hours later. even after we fed him he stayed for cuddles and had a nap and was licking us and generally showing affection. if you try to put him out he meows and cries at you, i’ve only just managed to get him to leave by walking into the garden and sitting there as he follows you everywhere!! i feel so bad and i do not want to steal another persons pet!! we are also planning on getting our own kitten and don’t want the cats to get confused or distressed by eachother. how do i set boundaries or make sure i am not taking away someone else’s cuddles :(( it’s a lovely cat but i dont want to confuse it or upset the owner / over feed it. i have never met the owner but i assume they live on my lane as that’s where i first met the cat the first few time’s.

any help or advice is appreciated and please do not slate me as after doing research i do realise i should not have fed the cat and my main goal is for the cat to be happy with its owner and the owner not to be missing their cat.

TLDR; my neighbours cat loves us and slept over at my house and never ever wants to leave what should i do
