Pet Insurance for Older Dogs

I have an older dog and am looking to add insurance. I previously had insurance but dropped it after I found it didn't cover much and everything was out of pocket regardless. At this juncture I'm looking to not get killed by any pre -existing conditions. My dog is healthy but has started to slow up a bit (likely has a stiff join in her front paw) in which case I'm concerned that that will exclude her from any meaningful coverage.

Are there any ways to navigate the initial check up to avoid diagnosing a pre-exisiting condition that will make the insurance all but worthless?
