My dog has been declining pretty rapidly within the past year, most noticeably in the past 4 months. He is losing motor function in his front legs, which keep collapsing, he refuses to go on walks, he sleeps more often, he spaces out and stares, and keeps bumping into things like he can’t see them. He is not the same dog he was a year ago. He used go on 7 mile hikes with me like it was nothing but now he can barely walk a few yards. I went to my vet (Banfield) and they did an X-ray and found a compressed nerve (disc?) and referred him to a neurologist. The neurologist charges $165 just for the consultation. My dog is everything to me and is only 10 years old (still young for a small dog - papillon/chihuahua mix). I’m not sure if it’s worth it to keep the appointment if I’m know I’m not able to shell out the $3-4,000 for an MRI - is there anything they’ll be able to do without the MRI? But if they are able to provide palliative or non-surgical care I would gladly do it if I am financially able. He does not appear to be suffering, although I know dogs can hide that sometimes. I don’t want to keep him alive solely for my benefit if he has no joy in life. Thoughts?
