My 11 year old chocolate Lab was diagnosed with bone cancer on Friday evening. He's already had one major operation since April after he became unable to empty his bladder and needing a cystotomy tube fitting, he was recovering well then suddenly started finding it difficult to get up, the vet suspected the stresses of the op had flared the existing arthritis in his hind legs so we opted for anti-inflammatory pain relief which seemed to help. The last week he started holding his leg up when he got up as if it was numb, we kept an eye on it with the vets advice but Thursday evening we noticed a swelling so we took him in Friday and X-rays confirmed the worst. The only potential treatment was amputation and that's providing the leg was the only tumor. We agreed he wasn't strong enough and the arthritis in his other leg would only leave him in long term pain.
With the aid of some strong pain relief we've given him the best weekend we could with trips to the beach and the forest being pulled along in a padded out wagon, plenty of treats and pets. So later today we say goodbye and my heart is already hurting, he has been my constant shadow since we adopted him 8 years ago, my daughter has never known life without him and our other dog is already 13 but thankfully going strong. It's going to be rough for a while.
