My Chihuahua is 13 years old he’s been in the family since birth and my parents really didn’t keep up with his vet visits. He lives with me now and has a terrible smell that comes from his mouth, he’s lost 2 teeth in the past that I know of, old age my dad said. My dog has been eating less and less everyday, I decided to take him to the vet, she showed me his teeth which are really rotten, she recommended we extract the rest of the teeth he has and get him on antibiotics to heal his gums, she told me of 2 other older dogs that had similar cases, both fully recovered and were acting like puppies afterwards, or so she said. The estimate right now is between 700-900 including meds and bloodwork. This is above my budget right now but I’m willing to make the sacrifices if this will fix his mouth and will allow him to eat as usually and essential extend my time with him, the problem? The moment I told my mom about this she told me the vet was probably lying just trying to get more money out of me before we have to essentially euthanize him. My question is has anyone had this happen with their dog? Did the teeth extraction and antibiotics really turn your dog around? And lastly, because I forgot to ask the vet, what would my dog eat after his procedure?
