Cat develops diarrhea if I leave for more than a week

Looking for some advice - I’ve left my cat in the care of very competent catsitters before when I’ve been on vacations (mostly over the holidays) for more than 7 or 8 days, any shorter and she’s never had an issue, but the past two years right around the end of the vacation she develops diarrhea and licks herself raw, and the vet has had to express her anal glands.

I don’t know what the possible cause of this even could be. She’s young, very healthy, doesn’t seem to have separation anxiety and if she did, wouldn’t symptoms show up earlier than after a whole week? I’ve asked the vet and he basically shrugged and had no suggestions.

The only possible thing I could think is that the petsitter only comes over once a day, and she’s used to eating three smaller meals a day, so she could be overeating and it finally gets to her after about a week.

She recovers quickly and doesn’t seem too traumatized, but it worries me for the future and I was hoping to be able to visit my family soon, maybe for two weeks, and I would like to be able to leave her in the apartment so she’s comfortable at home instead of dragging her to a boarding place and leaving her there where she possibly won’t eat at all. I was wondering if anyone else had ever experienced anything like this, or what the advice would be moving forward. Either boarding her, or having the petsitter come two times a day instead?
