TLDR- bought a new house to find out that the previous owner’s dog used the ENTIRE carpeted area in the basement as it’s toilet. Do you think the massive amount of dog pee all over the carpet caused my cat to poop and pee out of her litter box or do you think she has a health issue? Or both?
FULL STORY(if you wish): I have a black 2.5 year old cat that had never gone outside of the litter box before and I have moved her from new home to new home with ease. I am sorry for such a long post but I want to be as detailed as possible.
We bought our first house about a month ago. Everything seemed fine, our cat seemed to love the new house and really liked hanging out in the basement. I would catch her doing zoomies and rubbing her body all over the carpeted areas. Being first home buyers we don’t have that much furniture so the finished basement is just completely empty. The previous owners had a dog and had multiple rugs over the carpet and furniture.
A few weeks after settling into our home we decided to have a small social distanced gathering and the next morning I found a nice pile of poo in one of the corners of the basement. I figured it was my first instance of the legendary spiteful poo other cat owners joke about. I immediately clean out the litter box make sure she has fresh litter and go on my merry way thinking that was the end of it.
A few more weeks go by and everything is normal. I began religiously scooping her box on a shorter cadence. I noticed that there are less clumps but don’t think anything of it because I am cleaning the box out nearly every day- even twice a day.
We leave for the weekend to head up to the cabin. It’s her first time alone in the house. I make sure her litter box is clean she has ample food and water. We get back home and I find ANOTHER poop in the same exact spot. I go to her litter box and there are turds in there too. What I distinctly notice is that there is only ONE clump. I begin to freak out, could she have a UTI? Is she holding her pee? I can’t smell any cat pee in the basement. The next day we find a fresh hot turd, yet again in the same exact spot as the others. I check her litter box no clumps. I am now convinced she has to be peeing somewhere else.
I confined the cat in our guest bedroom which has wood floor and bring all her necessities. I schedule a vet visit. She finally pees and poops in the litter box. She thankfully has done it multiple times in the box at the time of writing this post. The enzymatic cleaner and the black light that I ordered off Amazon arrives
I order enzymatic cleaner and a black light so I can find the possible missing pee easier. They finally arrived. I head to the basement and for shits and giggles I start at the top of the stairs. I felt like I was a kid playing detective. I find my first spot very awkwardly positioned near the top of the stairs. OF COURSE I TAKE A SNIFF- I am a detective I must know what this spot is! DOG PEE. I head down to the dreaded basement carpet. It’s littered with bright fluorescent spots and I mean HOLY SHIT. I want to say 1/3 of the carpet is covered in pee. There isn’t a single square foot without a pee spot. Every single spot I smell is dog pee. I make it to the corner where we have found the infamous turd gifts. BOOM of course she’s gonna pee where she poops!
We have a carpet cleaner coming tomorrow but I’m afraid s/he is gonna tell us that the carpet is too far gone and to just replace it. Her visit to the vet isn’t until Saturday so we are going to keep her confined until then.
Could all the dog pee be the root cause of her new found love of peeing and pooping in the corner of the basement living room? Or do you think it’s because she has a UTI? Could it be both? Help me. This is my first cat and this is our biggest bump in the road to date. Any tips/ideas are greatly appreciated.
Oh and the cherry on top!!! We are getting an 8 week old puppy in 2 weeks. Pray for my cat and maybe me too for the possible further chaos this may cause to my cat that I will have to mediate. (I’m so fucking excited for this new puppy!!!! Like actually- I’m one of those millennials that bought a house to get a dog)
