This past Monday I took my 3-year old cat to the emergency vet for a fever, no appetite and low energy. Her temp was 105.6 when she was admitted so they kept her for the night. They diagnosed her with fever of unknown origin and had her on IV fluids and antibiotics and all that stuff. They sent her home with me the next day with antibiotics (clavamox and baytril) and cerenia for nausea. Since being home with me, her temp has been in normal range, ranging from 99.3-102.5. Her energy also seems to be back up. My only concern is that she’s still not eating much. When she sees that I’m preparing food she does get excited- starts rubbing against my legs and purring, but then when I put the food down, she’ll either only take a few bites or she’ll sniff it and then ignore it. Same thing when I shake the bag of treats- it piques her interest, but she’ll just end up sniffing and not eating it or spit it out. I gave her an appetite stimulant this morning and that didn’t do anything. It also doesn’t seem like she’s drinking her water. This is very confusing because like I said before, her temp is now within normal range and her energy is back up. I called the vet and they said that like humans, just because our fever broke doesn’t mean we still feel up to eating and to give her time but that answer didn’t sit well with me.
So, I’m wondering if anyone has had any experience with this? If your cat had a fever, did they have little interest in food and water even after the fever broke? I know this isn’t a place for vets but I just want to know how common this is and if is, how it’s dealt with.
TLDR: cat diagnosed with fever of unknown origin on Monday. Fever broke late Tuesday but appetite is still low. Is this common? Is it normal and will she get over it?
