Is it really abuse to not feed your cat meat?

My friends cat keeps bringing mice in from outside, and letting them run around the house. I was talking to my sister about it, and she said that's probably because he doesn't give his cat meat, and that's abuse, and that cats need meat to survive. Would a Cat really go catch a mouse, being it back inside, just to release it, because it needs meat? Why would the cat not eat it, if it needed meat so bad? My mom has a 15 yest old cat, who's just aten regular old kibble for 15 years, and the vet says she looks great for her age.
