Is this wrong? (Neighborhood cat question)

There is this sweet older cat who always lays on my doorstep around the time I get home from work. I always pet him and say hi. I can’t afford to care for a pet of my own and it breaks my heart... so mainly this is why I need to make sure I’m not being a lonely cat thief or breaking some code of ethics here.

Today I was petting him on my doorstep and the ground was burning my butt as I sat down. It was way too hot and couldn’t have felt good on his paws either, So...I let him inside my house for a little bit. Around 15 minutes. I just pet him in the doorway and then watched him sniff around. Then I felt like a cat thief so I picked him up and put him in a shady spot out front. He wanted to come back in but I thought that was enough for the day.

Is this wrong? He has a collar that says “not lost, will go home” and someone’s #. I have never fed this cat and I never intend to, I just want to pet him and offer my home as a hangout as he wishes. I’m super lonely and his brief presence in my home was really nice, however I would hate if I am doing something to harm his relationship with his real family. Is this something that’s okay with cat owners? Or should I not do this again
