I've had my cat for one week. I've been keeping her in her safe room, a pretty spacious closet at night time. Is this wrong?!

I've had my adorable kitten for a full week now... We always let her out of her safe room, which is a pretty spacious closet at night time or whenever we leave the house. Is this a cruel thing to do? My mother's friends made fun of us when we did and said we were terrible for doing that. She is very curious and comfortable with me. She meows a lot at night or pretty much when we leave her alone in the safe room. She seems ready for the rest of the house, but I am scared she'll fall from somewhere, or get into an unsafe spot I missed at night and nobody notices. Can somebody please help me out here?! The internet and what people are saying are two very different things, and I have no clue what to believe.

Thanks for reading to this point! Please reply in the comments about what I should do. :)
