I am stuck at an animal crossroads. A potential roommate has an extra room in their apartment that would be my first time living away from home. I desperately want independence from home life, but this roommate option has two cats, and I own three birds that would come with me. For context, I currently own three button quail (a two-ounce ground bird) who live in a 20-gallon tank (long) and they do tend to spook rather easily. They are a look-don't-touch pet, but they mean a lot to me, and I would hate to give them up for a chance at independence. It feels like selling a friend to escape, and that feels wrong.
