Hello everyone !
My boyfriend and I have been talking quite seriously about getting a pet for a while now, and even though we're still hesitant between dogs and cats, it looks like for now a cat would be the better option (he works full-time and I'm a student with a fairly unpredictable schedule and internships to do over the summer that would require long days).
The thing is, (outside of Covid-times), we go away relatively often for the weekends, to either his parents or mine, or even his grandparents (who have an unfenced garden in the mountains), and when I travel to my mom's place, the cat would possibly have to stay at my dad's. I know cats can be quite territorial, but always leaving it at home wouldn't necessarily be an option (cat-sitters are super expensive, they are really rare in my area, and I'd rather someone be with it at all times rather than 1 visit a day - plus my boyfriend wouldn't be keen on trusting someone with our keys due to bad experiences).
So basically, I would love some advice regarding the following:
- Can cats travel relatively often for weekend trips (Friday through Sunday evening), mostly by car or train ?
- Can cats stay at someone's place for longer trips (obviously if they're familiarised with the new place first) ?
- Can an adult cat (we're keen on adopting an older rescue) get used to this lifestyle, or would it be better to get a younger cat/kitten and "train" it to travel, and be on a leash/harness (for spending time in the mountains where most of the times all doors/windows are open) ?
- Or would it be better to wait a bit to get a dog ? (this would be hard though as we'll probably always have to work long hours, even when I've got a more stable schedule)

(For reference, we live in France, and longest car trip would be around 4 hours to see my in-laws)
