I adopted a previously feral cat 2 months ago. She's about 1.5 years old and is still skittish but otherwise affectionate. I just wanted to gain some input from this community regarding her hissing. As a first time cat owner, I've had to do research to clear up misconceptions I had regarding feline behavior, but one that still unnerves me is when my cat hisses. It's hard to not take it personally when I do everything in my power to make her feel safe and loved.
Today she hissed at me a couple of times throughout the day, which hasn't happened since she was new to us. Throughout her acclimation period, she may have hissed once or twice while getting to know us, but that's pretty much subsided. The only new thing that I think may be the cause for this is her first trip to the vet yesterday, which was a regular check up. However, when we returned from her trip, she almost immediately went back to normal. No hissing, she ate fine, played a bit, and she let us pet her.
Today, it's taken her a couple of times finish her dinner. She doesn't run to it immediately like she used to. I don't know if it's because I used food treats to lure her into her carrier... But she hissed and hissed seemingly randomly when I came out of the room and I felt such conflicting emotions. I was sad, shocked, and admittedly, a bit angry. I put my hand towards her, she sniffed, and reluctantly let me pet her. I finally decided to leave for a walk for both our sakes since she hissed at my husband too and then me again.
I'm sorry for the long story. I know many have probably gone through the same ordeal but I just wanted some place to vent. I'm still hurt over this, on the verge of tears, and I hate that I felt anger towards her.
