Last night my dog Mozart saved his sister Sophie’s life.
At 3:30am I heard Mozart, my 3 year old Newfoundland, let out two loud warning barks, startling me awake. My first thought was maybe he needed to go outside, but there was an urgency to his barks that I couldn’t ignore. I got out of bed to check on him, when I see Sophie, my 1 year old mixed breed rescue, sitting at the foot of my bed with her neck awkwardly stiff and her eyes bulging. I quickly realized that she was choking and unable to cough, bark, or breath. I frantically opened her mouth to feel for an obstruction where I found the hard end of a bully stick protruding from her throat. I immediately pulled the object out of her airway. She had swallowed a 10” long bully stick whole! Right after removing the blockage, Sophie coughed a few times, then visibly relaxed with a wag of her tail. While all of this was happening, Mozart was quietly sitting alert, observing the whole ordeal. As soon as Mozart could tell the situation was resolved and his sister was safe, he walked back to his bed and fell asleep, seemingly satisfied with a job well done.
I am forever grateful to Mozart for his intuition in knowing that Sophie was in danger. He could have kept sleeping, he could have simply stared at her in shock, or run in fear, but he acted on his natural life saving ability. Newfoundlands are known as “nanny dogs” and he truly earned that title by saving his sister’s life last night. Please be careful of choking hazards around your home, and give your dogs extra love today. They deserve it. ❤️
