Resident Cat Depressed Over New Kitten. Help?

The story is my family had 2 cats for 12 years. A male (14 yrs old) and a female (12 yrs old). They got along well with each other. Over the summer, we lost our male to cancer. Our female seemed really sad about his loss. She'd roam the house and cry constantly. We decided to get a kitten for her companionship and ours and just a week ago, we finally adopted one. He's very young, about 4 months and like all kittens he's energetic and zooms around the house.

Introductions between them were ok. A hiss or two but after a few days they can stand to be in the same room as one another. The kitten even wants to play with our female now. Our female intently watches him but doesn't really like him near her though.

My worry comes from I think she's really depressed about the new kitten. She's been sleeping almost constantly, doesn't purr anymore, looks generally sad, isn't eating a whole lot. I'm worried about her.

I don't want to have to rehome the kitten. Is this a normal reaction to older cats with new kittens? Will she be able to get past this and return to her affectionate ways? It's only been a week. Need some advice. :(
