Feral cats are misunderstood

So there was this "feral cat" that was stuck in my storage room garage for an extended period of time. I noticed it...and by it I mean a noise-not sure how long it was there for but as soon as I noticed the frantic buzz I thought it may have been a racoon or something so I left some food for it ( I live in the midwest so winters are pretty intense). Sure enough the food was gone the next morning when I went to check on it before work. I then mentioned the whole situation to my neighbor who is extremely good with animals (he has two cats that are very well socialized that started off feral). He helped me rescue it and now its living in my condo. I went and bought it a litter box, litter and some food. I left these items out for it in the room we left it in which is where I spend most of my day after work in. It just stays under the dresser where the tv sits on for the whole time and comes out and eats its food, drinks its water and does it business when I am asleep. I felt bad after a couple days so I left the door open thinking it was too scared to leave but still wanted to give it the option. One day I came back from work and it was gone, I spent a good amount of time looking for it with no success. But I know its still there because the food I leave out for it is being eaten every night. This has been going for about 3 weeks now...I would love to keep it as a pet but it doesn't seem to be warmed up to humans yet. Should I give it away or give it some more time? What are some things I can do to get it warmed up? People have told me the cat "chooses you" as in I just go about my daily routine and when its ready it will show itself but if I have this feeling it could have a better life with someone thats more experienced with cats-I have always been more of a dog person. What do you guys suggest?
