TLDR; skittish kitten is warming up but just recently started peeing on my bed. She also uses litterbox. How should I make her more comfortable.
Hi, I’ve had my Siamese kitten for two weeks now. Prior to me, she was in a home with an older cat who chased her and tormented her. The house was pretty busy but I was told she got along with the dogs and was pretty cuddly with the people in the house. I’m not sure her what her situation was like before then.
She’s still very skittish. She stays under the bed on a pillow most of the day, but she purrs and leans into my hand when I come over to pet her. I try not to force her out too often, but she occasionally comes out on her own or for food. I play with her and she’s really eager to be pet and cuddled, but if I or a roommate moves too quickly or makes a sudden noise, she dashes away back to under the bed.
I had made some good progress to where she would come out on her own to cuddle with me on the bed before I fell asleep. I’ve also played with her on the bed. She knows it’s not a toilet, which is why it surprised me to wake up to a spot where she normally curls up. I cleaned this and decided to leave her to her own during the day, thinking maybe I overdid the attention and she’s come out on her own. She stayed under the bed the entire day until her evening food, and then was very eager for attention. I left the room and when I came back 10 min later she had pooped on a totally separate part of the bed. I cleaned it, sprayed with enzyme cleaner to start the process, and now a third time she had poop next to the first area and pee next to this morning’s spot.
I decided to stick in the room and watch her and play for a while. She eventually used the litterbox and I pet her and cleaned it immediately after. She used the litter-box regularly and there haven’t been changed to the location or litter. She’s doing this in addition. There’s no signs of discomfort or incontinence. I will take her for a check up regardless.
I know going outside the litterbox isn’t a vengeful thing, and I’ve read it’s because it smells like me and she wants attention or is announcing something’s wrong. She’s also a kitten and still new to the house. However, considering she’s still so shy, how do I know if I’m giving her enough attention or not?
