I read that cats can go into heat and start spraying as early as 4 months and so expected I should get the kittens fixed before that point. All vets in my area that I've contacted say they only do it at 6 months without giving any good reason for why it can't be done before that. I've found from searching online that many shelters do it to kittens as young as 8 weeks old and that there are many benefits (such as reducing cancer risks) to doing it before 6 months.
My main concern is that they might mate but I really wish to avoid the spraying and yowling and other behaviors that come with them reaching sexual maturity. If I can't find anywhere that will spay and neuter them, how likely are they to mate with each other? Has anyone had luck getting the procedures done before 6 months?
