My cat had a pretty bad case of urinary blockage from struvite stones. He had a catheter inserted at least 5 times due to the catheter blocking with crystals.
I got him back from the vet around February 25.
The first two weeks were rough, but that's expected, given the trauma. The past 1.5 months have been pretty consistent: he's peed at least once a day outside of the litterbox, and trips to the litterbox usually come in more than one trip. He's clearly in pain while trying to go because he makes noises occasionally after leaving the litterbox. He still passes urine, so I know it's not a reblockage.
As part of his post care, he received multiple rounds of antibiotics. In addition, the vet gave me acepromazine (a sedative) to help, but I've found it hard to keep up with it consistently, between work and the fact he gives up on going to the at all litterbox to pee while on it. I still have enough left for about 10 days of treatment.
I'm getting to the point where I'm concerned that this is permanent. The fact is that once my work goes back to in person, I cannot continue to take care of this cat and his urine issues, but I love this cat and don't want to give him up.
Does anyone know if this long recovery time normal? Does this type of behavior indicate his issue with pain and peeing outside of the litterbox is permanent? Any other advice or input would be appreciated as far as correcting the behavior.
