hi, im trying to get my 9 year old dog used to my new kitten who i adopted 3 days ago. i feel like my case is kind of weird since my dog has always had cat friends since i adopted him years ago and has never hurt them. he is friendly with my adult cat but sometimes he chases him if the cat is being playful or noisy and ive had trouble getting him to stop. im trying to take the introduction to the kitten in short controlled sessions and im rewarding the dog for being calm. he isnt hyperfixated on my kitten and doesnt care about him if hes sitting still, but he does tremble around him, and will lock his vision onto him if he starts running around. i can tell his prey instinct is activated in a way its not when he plays with the adult cat i assume because the kitten is so tiny. i can tell hes trying to control it because he wants to please me. i think he might even be scared of the kitten or scared hes going to get in trouble around the kitten because ive crated him for chasing cats in the past. is this something that can be helped while the kitten is still small? i am having a hard time because the kitten just likes him so much and wants to rub all over him so its hard to keep them apart when i let them see each other and i think it makes my dog more tense.
