I am looking for a dog that could stay as a friendly family dog while being a very efficient guard dog.
So basically, I am 16 years old, I am a beginner to all of this pet stuff and I frankly don't know whether I would be a good owner or not. The most experience I've had interacting with a dog was putting dog food on a bowl. I've been bitten once, right above my thigh, near my groin, so I am quite skeptical of bigger, more dangerous dogs, as I obviously value my family's and my life.
My family and I have been living in an apartment for almost a year now, and our soon to-be house is 90% constructed. I would say the size of my whole lot is around 4 average sized high school classrooms, and my yard is about 3/4s of a classroom. My personal room is about 2/4s of a classroom.
I was thinking of getting a German Shepherd, but I thought that he/she would be too big for our house, our yard, and frankly my room, so I'm worried the more he/she ages, his/her size might be too big for him/her to fit (and I'm worried I won't be able to discipline the dog as that breed has one of the largest fatality attacks on humans)
My second choice was an Australian/Cairn/Norwich Terrier, fits in the house, our yard, my room no matter how old they get, they're also friendly, easy going, and challenging. But, I really don't think a small, cute looking dog would intimidate anyone trying to trespass our property.
I was also thinking of getting a Golden/Labrador Retriever, big, friendly family dog, easy to train, but I've heard that they aren't exactly good guard dogs, as they get *waaay* too friendly.
So I'm here, scouring in reddit, to seek for advice. What's a good dog breed to get?
