Male, neutered, cat suddenly started “humping” his bed.

We have had him around three years, since he was a stray and just moved himself in. He is a very gentle and slightly ‘slow’ cat, and has always been quiet skittish. No matter how much we pamper him he freaks out and runs at the slightest noise.

I decided to get him a new bed so he could have a place of his own that he can run to if he gets scared. It seems to have worked and he is more settled now.

However, for the past week and a half he has been acting so strangely. He was practically vibrating in his sleep at one point with his eyes open, I was panicking so wiggled his belly and paw (which would usually have him up and across the room), but he would not move at all. When he woke up, he just went back to cleaning himself like nothing was wrong.

Now, every single time he gets back in his bed, which is similar to this one, he puts his legs on either side of the ‘doughnut’, pushes his bum down towards the cushion and does about twenty laps around and around, humping the edge of the bed. As he’s doing this he kneads the bed with his paws and purrs so loud you can hear him from the front of the house. Then he flops down with his willie out, licks it for a while and drops in to a dead sleep again.

It’s bizarre! He’s neutered and has never done anything like this before. It’s not even like the bed is an obvious cause, because he had it a week before this started. I almost feel sorry for him because he looks so frustrated that he’s not getting anywhere with the humping. He just starts twitching and gives up; I’m not sure if it could be something worth a trip to the vet over.

Does anybody have experience with this or know what may be causing it years after being neutered?

Thank you in advance!
