My cat is the sweetest thing you could imagine, he's very cuddly and warms up to strangers quickly, whether they pay attention to him or not. To make this easier I'm gonna call him C. In April 2018 we got a new flatmate, let's call him M. Now while M has never been someone you would like to live with, we dealt with it and made it almost to a year. C didn't interact with M a lot, but he also didn't dislike him, played with him every now and then and let himself be pet by M a little.
For about 8 days now, C stops whatever he ist doing when he hears M and bolts into my bedroom when he sees him. He interrupts even eating and cuddling with someone. C has never reacted like this to anyone except one cat-hating dog who chased him while barking (and even then he only ran, when the dog had noticed him. He was still laying on the couch until the dog came too close). When something falls down or someone sneezes, C is scared of the sound and runs, but he comes back fairly quickly and doesn't seem to connect the sound to someone around it.
Because this behavior is so unlike him, I'm afraid that M did something that caused C's fear. I've talked to M about this and he swears nothing happened (no sudden sounds that could've scared him, he didn't accidentally step on his tail, etc). Also.. I'VE stepped on C's tail before by accident (as have my other flatmates) and while he did run off for a bit he was back a few seconds later like he knew that it didn't happen on purpose.
As C seems to be really tense I'm concerned that this living situation is too stressful for him..
