Wife has a lot of preferences. Am I doomed to be petless?

Hi everyone, I'm in a bit of unique situation. I'm a recently married dude and I recently realized that my wife has very very specific preferences when it comes to pets. She is against any pet that looks "rodent like" and cats. Which, basically leaves dogs...

We definitely have the income to take care of a dog including any emergency vet bills. We live in a wood floor apartment so that is not an issue. We're also both willing to devote the time to walk the dog and play with it. I can also work from home about once a week.

The only issue is our schedules leave about an 8:30 to 4:30ish window where we would be away from home most week days. So I guess my question is, given the right breed and age, would owning a dog still be possible?

We honestly wouldn't mind getting an older dog but I wouldn't be comfortable getting one if it meant that it was going to be home for 7 hours being bored and lonely. I've been doing some research online about breeds that are lower energy and more independent, but the research seems to conflict (dogtime.com seems to differ from other "guides").
