Hey all, first time posting here but I'm not really sure where to post to ask this question. If it's not here, please let me know and I'll definitely remove the post. Anywho.
My girlfriend has been watching her "friend's" dog for months now, probably at least 3 or 4. This girl hasn't come to visit once, hasn't paid for anything nor had anything even remotely to do with the dog. From what my girlfriend tells me, the girl who technically "owns" the dog is in absolutely no position to own this dog nor take care of it. My girlfriend asked her a few weeks ago if we could just adopt the dog as she seemingly has no desire for her back, and after a couple days the girl texted her back and said her mother wants the dog...not even her, but they don't want the dog until the end of summer??....
Having heard that, I knew my girlfriend would be devastated, and honestly so would I because the dog and I have really bonded (she always sleeps at my feet while I'm playing video games and such, it's quite a nice relationship), so I knew it would be better to just kinda rip the band-aid off for lack of a better way to put it and told my girlfriend to tell her friend to come get the dog ASAP, not at the end of the summer (this dog shouldn't be treated like some piece of property imo). So the girl was supposed to come get the dog today, but never showed, not even a text or anything. We truly don't think this girl should get this dog back, and nor do any of my girlfriend's friends.
So the question is, is there anything we can legally do to secure the dog with us and not have this girl be able to just randomly show up and take her back? My girlfriend works with the owner so I'd like to keep it as civil as possible, but we truly don't believe she will take good care of the dog and the dog leaving us and her fellow puppers seems like a really bad idea. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!!
