Firstly, a little background. We think that our cat is about 7-8 years old, but we can't be sure since we took her in as an adult stray. She had clearly had another owner before us since she was litter trained. Due to the fact that she was - and has always been - a very nervous cat, we suspect that she was either mistreated or had a hard time fending for herself for a long time as a stray. Whatever happened, she is a gorgeous and affectionate cat now and we love her very much, but we were never able to do much to improve her nerves in the 4 years or so that we've had her (although we did try).
Nowadays, she generally prefers to spend time alone in the back garden, but lately she has been really vocal and crying at us every time she sees us. I have a hard time figuring out what she wants when she does this - I let her in/out, I give her food, I make sure she has access to the litter tray and the garden in case she needs to go to the toilet. If none of this works I assume she just wants attention, so I will sit with her and give her some scratches, but she will only hang around for this for a few minutes and then run off, only to come back again a few minutes later and start meowing again.
Does anyone else get this from their cats, and have you managed to figure out what they want?
