I need help choosing a cat!

Before I begin, I’m gonna preface by saying that this is hypothetical and my options may be limited when the time comes. Also, I wasn’t entirely sure where to ask this, so I’m sorry if I’m in the wrong place.

So in about a year, I’m going to move to another city for college and be completely independent. Considering I’ll be living alone in an apartment, I’ve been leaning on the idea getting a pet to give me company.

I know I’ll likely have a busy schedule and living in a city (most likely Chicago) will make it harder to have a dog — they generally require a lot more attention, walking, etc. Because of this, I’ve been leaning more on getting a cat since they can be more independent and do their business inside.

I won’t lie in saying I’m more of a dog person. I love them both, but I grew up with dogs and I want my new companion to have certain qualities that dogs do — loving and playful, energetic, etc. I was also super into the idea in be able to train my pet with a bunch of commands (sit, stay, shake). Like, yeah, I totally want a puppy.

So, my question is: what cat breeds would be best suited for me? I want one that is incredibly loving and enjoys being held, but also able to withstand hours alone. Are there breeds that can be trained? I also don’t want a cat to be ripping apart my furniture/peeing everywhere. I know most cat breeds shed fur, but are some easier to maintain? Also, I absolutely adore small pets! If there were teacup cats I’d be over the moon.

None of these qualities are ride-or-die, but I’m wondering what the best possible fit for my lifestyle will be.

Also, please don’t witch-hunt me about only getting a rescue (idk if it will happen here but I’ve seen it on Reddit before); I obviously want to go a humane route when finding either an adoption or shelter, and once I have a general idea my first place to look for my friend will be a rescue source. However, I would absolutely love raising the little dude/girl from being a small kitten and I’m here asking about breeds (is it hard to be selective when rescuing?); I’m willing to buy my friend.

Lately I’ve been looking at the “Ragdoll” cat breed, but I would also like input! Thanks to anyone who answers!
