Hello all. I have two cats. One is 2 (Jellybean), the other is 3(Polly). Jellybean was with us first, and about a month and a half ago we got Polly. At first, Jellybean was territorial (hissed a lot) and Polly was curious about her, but recently their attitudes toward each other have changed. I took all of the recommended steps to introduce them over the course of two weeks, and didn’t have much of an issue. Both cats are female. Most of the time, they don’t interact. They eat near each other with no issues and mind their own business.
However, Jellybean is playful, while Polly is not. Jellybean often tries to initiate play, which causes Polly to hiss and swat. Polly was declawed by her previous owners, which I feel is necessary information. Today she peed outside of the litter box, and it’s making me wonder if she’s been doing this for a while. I bought a new, gentler cat litter and box for her and put it somewhere quiet, as I recently found out that declawed cats may be extremely distressed by the texture of regular litter.
Anyway, I am thinking that because of Polly’s stressors from being declawed, she may be scared of Jellybean. I obviously can’t communicate to them that Jellybean wants to play and Polly does not, but I don’t really know how to remedy this.
We are moving in a month so I’m uncomfortable making any dramatic changes so close to us moving to a new location.
Has anyone had this problem and found a good solution? We give both cats lots of attention, and play with jellybean to try to wear her out, but I think she really just wants to be “friends” and Polly is scared/uninterested.
What steps can I take to make this less stressful for both of them?
