Last night when i fed my toads, I accidentally gave them too many flightless fruit flies. They began escaping from the tank (to my great dismay as it is in my bedroom). My short term solution was to add pieces of tape around the top edge of the enclosure so that any flies climbing up would get stuck, and I placed a mostly empty bottle of beer next to the enclosure to attract and drown any escapees. The tape is cumbersome however and since the toads will be moving into a new enclosure in the next month or two I did not want to invest in a new lid for this tank.
So, I just thought of this idea - since this is a 15 gallon tank the lid is relatively small. If I just put the whole lid into a pair of pantyhose, the flies will be unable to escape, extras wont die and be wasted, and there will still be airflow. I wont be able to open the small hatch on the lid, but its small enough that i almost never use it anyway and generally just take the whole lid off when I need to get in there
Has anyone tried this? Any thoughts on this idea? Any risks I haven't thought of? I don't want to do anything that will cause the tank to heat up as it does sit around 75-80 as is which is the upper limit of "comfortable" for this species of toad.
