Bloodwork in cat showed renal failure. Advice & Support welcome and needed.

Recently I noticed my older cat (pure bred Ragdoll, age 12) was using his litter box more frequently and urinating for longer periods of time (it seriously sounds insane sometimes when he’s in there), drinking A LOT more, and crying all the time at all hours of the day no matter what we tried - treats, no treats, fresh water, clean litter, paying him attention, trying to ignore, etc etc. Since the day I scheduled the appointment, he stopped crying as badly but the frequent urination and constant drinking continued.

Took him to the vet and they ran some bloodwork that indicated he is in the first stages of kidney failure. On Monday I have to go back to drop him off for x-ray’s so they can see if they’re able to determine why there is renal failure (stones, infection, cancer, etc.).

I have heard from a few people that switching to certain food brands can really help prolong this situation (with ultimately there being no cure). I also understand that without them doing x-rays yet, we are still a little in the dark, but this cat is like my first child and I want to move as quickly as possible to try to slow the process down for him. I know this is often very common in older cats.

Has anyone gone through something similar where they have a certain brand of food that they would recommend? Are cats generally in pain during first stages of this?

I’ll admit I’m in a little bit of a distraught mode right now and panic mode as I want to do anything to prevent this from happening (when it’s already too late), so I guess I’m just looking for support for others who have gotten news that it’s the beginning of the end, how did you feel, what did you do to start preparing, etc.? IF this is something I even need to be preparing for or if I’m jumping the gun and being ridiculous (lol).

And any recommendations of food brands would be great. I’ll be meeting with the vet Monday and also will see his suggestions on food brands, treatment, etc. But if there’s anything I can start immediately, I’d like to know my options.
