My cat was spraying, so my vet recommended Clomicalm. I'm aware of two studies involving Clomicalm- One conducted in 1998 which found that 10/10 cats that remained in the study (one cat was removed by the owner, not sure why) showed improvement in their symptoms. Another one conducted more recently which found that 20/25 cats showed improvement in their symptoms- although one of the authors worked for Novartis, so there could have been a conflict of interest.
Anecdotally, I haven't been able to find anything that describes the symptoms my cat is experiencing.
When she first started Clomicalm, she started using the litterbox. Wasn't spraying all that often, but it's not uncommon for her to go through those periods when she isn't on a medication.
Now, well past the few weeks mark, she sprays constantly. At least once a day every day. Tonight she got into a spat with one of my other cats- fairly typical behavior, but based on the noises they were making this sounded much worse than other spats they've gotten into in the past.
The couch, the curtains, the window, the floor, clothes, bags, walls- every surface has probably been sprayed on at least once. It didn't used to be this bad and, as I'm not sure cats experience the placebo effect, there's no other explanation I can think of for her behavior. Aside from the fact that she has difficulty with taking the medicine (she refuses food with it so she gets a liquid suspension via syringe.) But that wouldn't explain why it's gotten worse over time. That's why I wanted to hear from other cat owners. Also, if anything has worked for you to stop your cat from spraying, please let me know. We don't want to giver her up, but if her aggression towards the other cats worsens and she continues spraying on everything, we may have no choice.
