FORL: Does anyone have experience with this

My cat apparently has forl.

She became less affectionate. She went from a snuggly cat sleeping with me to letting us hold her only for short times. I initially assumed this was just her settling into our home. I thought she was starved for affection and is now caught up. She was adopted from a local shelter. But when she started losing weight, I realized she was afraid to eat. She twice almost winced when we touched the right side of her jaw.

The initial vet exam didn't find anything alarming. She said a little gingivitis, but nothing that seemed to be significant. She gave her a steroid injection and antibiotics. In the meantime we made adjustments for her. We changed where we fed her, put her on canned food, and we never touched her mouth or jaw area. She really improved. She stopped being skittish while eating, gained wait, and started jumping in our lap for some petting. But I felt like something was still wrong.

We took her back. The vet ultimately feels it is FORL. Essentially the roots of her teeth are dissolving and causing pain. She referred us to a specialist that could do dental xrays, but I had her do xrays as a starting point. She saw enough damage on the xrays to be quite sure it is FORL even though it isn't dental xrays.

Friday we go to the other vet. They are experienced with this. They are supposed to be calling tomorrow after they have reviewed her records.

So my question is has anyone dealt with this? I have not really been able to find a lot of information on this. I am anxious and ready for her to be pain free. I hate that we didn't notice it sooner, but even now she doesn't seem to be in pain. But by watching her closely we can see something is not right.

Did you have just some teeth removed or all of them? If only some did it come back in the remaining teeth? A complete extraction has been mentioned in passing with both vets. It was more of a "even if a complete extraction is needed we have cats recover and be like a new cat.". The initial quote was a high estimate of worst case that included full extraction. I don't know if I will have to make a decision such as only some teeth have to come out, but we really recommend all of them because it will probably come back.
