We adopted an older dog last Christmas. She is 7 and we are her 4th home.
Home 1 was with an elderly man who passed from Alzheimer's. Home 2 (the home we got her from) was with an elderly lady. Home 3 lasted only 2 days and this sweet girl was rejected and sent back to home 2 because she dared to sit on their precious couch!
So here we are 10 months in. First few months, she was naturally settling in, learning our routines just as we learned about her - no problems there. It is clear she is feeling safe with us as she is playful, eats well, loves cuddles - she is an amazingly sweet doggo! Which leads us to our issue.
Any sudden movement, loud voice or sound and she drops to the floor in terror and runs from the room. If you pick up anything resembling a stick be it a boom, mop, ruler she looks at you terrified like she expects you to hit her with it.
it breaks my heart knowing that somebody took a stick to her! Like what kind of looser takes a stick to a dog- to any animal! Tonight I picked up my orthopaedic reacher and she gave me her look of pain and fear. I cuddled her and told her nobody in her new home would ever hurt her.
how can i convince her shes not going to be hit? I would love to be able to throw a stick and have her chase it instead of cowering on the floor in abject misery.
