My boyfriend's cat is extremely aggressive. Help?

My boyfriend has a 6 year old cat he adopted from the shelter when she was about 1. Apparently, he went into the room full of cats, and him (wanting a nice cat) adopted the sweet cat that came and slept on his legs. When he took her home, she slept for about 24 hours, and woke up and became a demon.

She would attack him, swat at everyone's legs (hard), hiss, yell, etc. He figured it was just an adjustment period, but still took her to the vet to have her checked out. She had an ear infection, and the vet suggested that might be the issue, but when it went away, she was still demonic. He took her again, and she was so badly behaved that they told my boyfriend never to bring her back because they didn't want to deal with a cat so violent toward them. He took her to another vet that recommended removing her front claws just based on how violent she was with them to him and anyone he'd bring around.

She's since adjusted to him a bit. She comes for pets from him, if she wants something, but otherwise just seems to tolerate him touching her. When he holds her, she grumbles, moves her tail like she's upset, and has her ears back. But that's just forward progress with him.

He lived in the apartment above his family's business. One of his parents' friends/workers would go upstairs and the cat would corner the lady. I've been around the cat for months, and the only time she lets me touch her is if BOTH of us are sleeping and she wants food and she sees my hand out of the covers and thinks its his. Otherwise, she's a nightmare.

We recently moved into a house together. Because of her behavioral issues, I thought it best to leave my two (and very sweet) kitties to stay living with my mom. I've been here every day since, and she still yells, hisses, and swats my leg full force when I walk past (I've been seriously thankful for the vet that suggested to remove her claws because she hits HARD). I try not to acknowledge her in any way, as I don't want to be perceived as a threat. On Sunday, I was cleaning and went to walk out of our bedroom. The cat was standing outside of our room, and as I walk past, she lunged at me, and sunk her teeth into my calf. I have 4 holes that bruised and bled instantly she bit that hard. I know being violent back to a cat doesn't help their behavior, so I just sort of walked away from it and showed my boyfriend.

I can't imagine continuing to live with this animal at this rate. One of my friends is a vet, and she recommended pheromones and kitty zoloft. Neither of which has helped make any improvements. This animal puts a lot of stress on me being here. It makes me resent the fact that I can't bring my two pets I've had for about 10 years and miss very much because I'm sacrificing being with them to be with an aggressive cat.

We're out of ideas how to fix this behavior, and he's been considering giving her to a no kill shelter, finding her a new home equipped with time to deal with her behavioral issues, or giving her away to be a barn cat or something. I'm unsure of how to progress from here. I feel selfish for wanting to get rid of it, but I also feel we're out of options.
