My senior dog has a compressed neck disc, how can I make her comfortable and happy?

My lab is around 13 years old. When we cleaned her ears the other day we had to roll her on her side and she started crying out when we did so. She began limping on her front paw, then her back, then her other front. She was crying out anytime we touched her. We took her to the emergency vet and they discovered she has a compressed neck disorder? Basically like a slipped disc level of pain. They said with strict bed rest she should improve in 1 week. If she doesn't improve, either surgery or euthanasia. But since she's eating, wagging her tail still, and still can feel her legs, signs are good they think.

We can't get her into a kennel, she's terrified dof them. But we bought her a toddler gate to keep her confined downstairs and sleep on the couch down there beside her. She's on pain medication and steroids and we bought her the best most expensive dog food and treats we could find and cozy blankets. But she still seems uncomfortable. She just lays there and pants like she wants to get up. I'm so upset for her. Hearing her try to get up and can't and cry out breaks my heart. Is there anything else I can do to help her?

I also feel horribly guilty. We always thought she just had a really stupid run and laid weird, but these were early signs of the disease. She has always been an anxious panting type of dog, so two weeks ago when she began panting more and not sleeping as much I didn't think it was abnormal and ignored it. Lastly, us rolling her on her side to clean her ears is what trigerred it to get so bad. I feel so awful.
