Our new rescue dog is a bit of an odd ball and I was wondering how to approach training him. He loves other dogs. He’ll play with them (we have another dog and they get along great). We even taken him to dog bars and he does good there too (until he gets tired then he can get grumpy). But when I walk him on leash, and either he sees a dog in a yard or we pass another dog walker, he FLIPS out. At first I thought it was excitement because he likes dogs so much and it’s more of a yelp than a bark, so when it happened again I asked the person “hey he’s a new dog and I want him to get used to seeing other dogs, can they meet?” And there was immediate tension with the dogs. He barked in an aggressive way and they other dog looked ready to snap. Luckily the other person was really nice about it. Any dog we pass in a yard barks at him aggressively (before he even barks at them). This never happened with our other dog.
Anyways, it almost seems like he gives off some vibe or scent to other dogs that says “I’m gonna fight you” even if he has no intention of doing so it seems like. Is it just that he hates being on leash around other dogs? I have no idea how to approach the situation. Do we get some people willing to have their dog walk their dog alongside ours to train him? Do we use a shock collar and treat it like a barking problem? It’s so weird and unpredictable that I’m not sure what to do. Anyone else deal with this?
Thanks!
