Really can't decide on bird or reptile

I want to preface this by saying I'm in no way intending to storm into the nearest pet shop tomorrow. Perhaps not even for another year or two, mainly because if this sub has taught me anything it's that research is damn important. So this post helps me to narrow down my field of research in advance.

Dogs and cats are cool, but they don't even come close to my love for birds (mainly small parrots) and reptiles (mainly snakes, tortoises, lizards). I'll probably get one of both categories eventually, but I'd like to take it easy first because I never had a pet. Call it training wheels for myself.

So the question stands: which of the two groups are generally "easier" to take care of? Not just financially (space requirements, food, toys, vet bills) but also in respect to the bigger picture, such as how much they actually do for the playful buddy we want all pets to be, how much physical attention they need, how much ruckus they make at midnight. Stuff like that.

I'm aware this varies harshly on species, but my gut tells me a vague idea can still be guestimated.

Any input helps!
